This is the text of a speech by the actor Richard Gere that was published in the New York Times April 13, 1993. Mr. Gere describes the oppression of Buddhist monks by the Chinese Government and urges the U.S. Government to change its policies toward Tibet. He accuses the U.S. Government of giving the Dalai Lama the "cold shoulder" and of selling out Tibet to gain favor with China.
